Saint John's Long Wharf hit by early-morning fire

An early-morning fire at Long Wharf in Saint John has been brought under control by fire crews, although the cause of the fire is still unknown.

Fire crews were called to a small fire at Long Wharf just before 5 a.m. on Wednesday.

A bumper from the side of the wharf made from large wooden beams and truck tires caught fire. The flames were visible from as far away as Chesley Drive

The fire destroyed a wooden and rubber bumper used to keep ships from hitting the side of the wharf.

The fire was brought under control with 15 minutes.

That area of Long Wharf is usually fenced off to the public.

Platoon Chief Steven Voutour said it was too soon to speculate on the cause of the fire, but work recently in that area might have ignited a stray spark.

While the cause isn't yet known, the bumper "didn't spontaneously combust," Voutour said.

"It was likely an external source."

Voutour said an investigation may be launched at a later time.
