Saint Laurent has invested heavily in its past, buying an enormous private collection of vintage YSL clothing from the 1966-to-1985 period. Purchased from collector Olivier Châtenet, the 4,000 pieces make up a complete collection and will join the Saint Laurent archive, which is housed in Paris.

"Monsieur Yves Saint Laurent established an extremely valuable heritage which is an endless source of inspiration," current creative director Anthony Vaccarello explained in a press release.

The exact figure of the sale has been kept under wraps, but according to WWD, it includes "coats, dresses, suits, blouses, knitwear, bags, shoes, jewellery, scarves and some haute couture outfits, including a beaded dress from the African-inspired spring 1967 line that formerly belonged to the Duchess of Windsor".

The pieces join the already expansive vintage YSL collection, which features 5,000 pieces of clothing, 15,000 accessories, as well as thousands of sketches, all of which is housed at the brand's headquarters.

"I like the idea of this collection having a life and being useful, not just something I enjoy on my own," Châtenet told WWD on his decision to sell the collection. "I’ve had lots of fun putting it together over the last 30 years and showing it, with exhibitions in Paris, Hong Kong and Shanghai, and it wasn’t about ownership. I still love it as much, even if it no longer belongs to me."
