New Orleans Saints quarterback and former Fresno State star Jake Haener was suspended for the first six games of the NFL season for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, the league announced Wednesday.

Haener released a statement on social media saying “I recently learned that I tested positive for a substance banned by the NFL earlier this summer” and “I still do not know how the substance got into my body, as none of my supplements or prescribed medications contain the banned ingredient.”

Haener apologized to the Saints, family and friends.

Haener was fourth on the Saints’ depth chart behind starter Derek Carr and backups Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill.

With the NFL season starting this week — the Saints host the Tennessee Titans in a Week 1 matchup Sunday — the news of Haener’s suspension came as a shock to some fans on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Haener would be eligible to play Oct. 19 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

He was selected in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL draft by the Saints.

Haener led Fresno State to a Mountain West championship last season and a LA Bowl win over Washington State at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

He finished the season with 2,896 passing yards and 20 touchdowns.
