Samuel Simpson charged after allegedly running vehicle off Highway 3

RCMP in Behchoko, N.W.T., say Samuel Simpson has been charged with multiple offences after allegedly ramming his vehicle into another car intentionally — sending one person to hospital.

The incident happened on Highway 3 at around 7 a.m. Monday, when a woman in distress flagged down a driver.

The driver, who police say was a local person known to the woman, stopped and picked her up. Their car was then followed and intentionally struck by a second vehicle, causing the car to roll.

The two people in the overturned vehicle were taken to the local health centre and treated for their injuries. The driver was then released, and the woman was taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife.

In a news release, RCMP say she has since been released from the hospital.

The driver of the second vehicle left the scene.

Simpson, 57, was arrested shortly after the incident. He's charged with assault, assault with a weapon, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, failure to remain at the scene of an accident and uttering threats.

Simpson is due in court on July 27.
