Celebrities everywhere took part in #NationalSelfieDay on Thursday, sharing both their most glam and their bare-faced photos. But Sarah Hyland had a different kind of selfie to post, which revealed a startling update on her health.

The 27-year-old, who has previously opened up about suffering from kidney dysplasia, took to her Instagram Story to share a photo of herself during her current hospitalization. Her battle with the chronic illness can often bring about physical changes, such as fluctuation in her body weight. However, this time it seems as though a swollen face is the painful symptom.

“Sometimes a selfie is more than just a good angle and feelin cute,” the actress wrote. “This time for #nationalselfieday I’ve decided to share my truth. As painful as it is.”

The puffiness in Hyland’s face and around her eyes is common for those with a kidney disease, as a result of the protein leaked into the urine and an increase in sodium retention. Although it’s something that Hyland has dealt with before, she reminds followers to always take health seriously, regardless of other sacrifices.

“So here is my face that was torn from work against my will,” she continued. “But I’m very grateful it was. Health should always come first.”

In a later post, Hyland shared that she has been in the hospital since Monday. Even though she admits to missing her dog, she’s luckily received an outpouring of love from fans wishing her a quick return to good health.
