Saskatchewan man charged in 'disturbing' sex assault, robbery near UVic

A Saskatchewan man has been arrested and charged with six counts of break and enter, sexual assault, forcible confinement and robbery in relation to an incident back in January which Saanich police described as "extremely disturbing."

Police say David Hope, 43, of Saskatoon forced his way into the University of Victoria-area ground floor apartment of two women in their early 20s before sexually assaulting and robbing them. After the assault, Hope allegedly herded both women to a bank machine and forced them to withdraw money before fleeing.

Investigators say Hope, who has ties to Victoria, was taken into custody in Saskatoon. He was transported back to Victoria on Wednesday and is scheduled to appear in court today.

Acting Sgt. Jereme Leslie of Saanich police says the incident was traumatizing to the victims and community.

"I think the entire community was shocked by these events," said Leslie. "And certainly that area of the community was definitely fearful and feeling uneasy in their own homes."

It is alleged that Hope banged on the women's door Jan. 27 and then muscled his way in when someone answered it. Police say the women did not know the man.
