Saskatchewan thief steals swather, uses it, damages it, bails

In a truly 'Saskatchewan' crime story, RCMP are looking for a suspect who stole a $75,000 swather and then used it to swath a piece of nearby land.

RCMP said sometime between 11:30 p.m. CST on Sept. 1 and 7 a.m. on Sept. 2, the 2007 swather was stolen from a field near Englefeld, Sask.

The farming equipment was later found north of Englefeld, which is about 145 kilometres east of Saskatoon. However, the ten-foot swather roller is still missing.

While stealing something valuable like a swather isn't completely unusual, what the thief did with it was both fitting and bizarre.

RCMP told CBC the stolen swather was used on a piece of nearby land and the damage occurred after the crop was cut. The suspect then abandoned it.

The thief also didn't have to work too hard to steal the swather, as the owner left it unlocked with the keys inside.

Anyone with information is asked to call Humboldt RCMP at 306-682-2535 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
