Saving Fido in a fire: New window decals alert first responders

A sticker in the window might make the difference for beloved pets when it comes to escaping from a fire.

The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society and Parker DKI Construction have partnered to offer free window decals to alert first responders to the presence of cats, dogs, birds and other animals in a home.

"During an emergency it's really important emergency responders know there are pets inside the home," said humane society executive director Melanie Coulter.

The decals are free, but the humane society is accepting donations. Parker DKI Construction donated $1,500 for the window stickers to be printed.

"A lot of times, [pets] will hide inside the home, especially cats. They're afraid and so they find a place they feel safe," said Tecumseh Fire's Bob Hamilton, adding that dogs usually follow residents out of the building.

Hamilton says including your pet in your personal safety and evacuation plan is important, but that home owners could put a second sticker in the room or area where the pet usually is.

"Your pets are an extension of your family," said Parker DKI president Jim Parker.

The stickers can be picked up at Parker DKI locations, the humane society and at Tecumseh Fire and Rescue.
