‘Scandal’ Tweet-cap: The Monster Within

Warning: This recap for the “A Traitor Among Us” episode of Scandal contains spoilers.

Everyone has a weakness. Even Papa Pope, as we saw last week. For Huck, it’s vulnerable women with a sob story.

That’s why he was drawn to Quinn, in the beginning (before she became as badass as him). And why he became involved with Becky (the woman who tried to assassinate Fitz in Season 2). And it’s why he has fallen in love with Meg, the seemingly terrified best friend of the (not) dead Jennifer Fields.

As he points out, Olivia’s weakness and blind spot is her dad. Well, the women in his life are Huck’s blind spot. Yes, that even includes Olivia, to whom he gives complete loyalty. And that blind spot ultimately proves to be Huck’s downfall.

Here’s a rundown of this week’s episode, including our live tweets:

Huck and Meg are sparring, flirting, and making out at the boxing gym when Quinn and Charlie interrupt them. Olivia is missing, and they need to find her. Huck receives a call from Olivia to pick her up from the middle of nowhere, and she explains the whole story with Jake and Jennifer Fields.

Olivia then asks Huck to kill her father, because he assassinated Frankie Vargas. Huck is aghast. Is she sure? Is she 100 percent certain that Rowan did this? She declares that she is and orders him to make it happen.

Huck goes into assassin mode, pulling out his red toolbox of death. Yikes. He follows Rowan into the subway but soon loses him. As the train pulls away, Rowan pulls one over on Huck and confronts him.

Huck pulls a gun on Rowan, but the former Command warns him that there are people watching and waiting. Rowan admits he killed Vargas, but he was forced to do it to protect the woman he loves. What? Nobody forces the Puppet Master? Rowan shakes his head. “This is not a test. Our adversary is more than worthy.”

Rowan then insinuates there is a traitor in Olivia’s crew, ready at any moment to put a bullet in her head. Huck spies the Mystery Woman, clearly looking for Rowan, and realizes that Command is speaking the truth.

Huck goes home to his mega computer monitoring station, where he eavesdrops on Quinn and Charlie bantering and talking smack about Meg. He overhears Quinn take a mysterious call and follows her to a hotel room — where he also finds Jake and Jennifer Fields.

Huck pulls a gun on Quinn and accuses her of being a mole. Quinn vigorously denies this, and then pulls her gun on him. Jake tries to defuse the situation by showing Huck a picture of Sandra and telling him that Rowan was trying to protect her.

They finally reach a detente and put down their guns. Back at the office, Huck suggests perhaps Charlie is the traitor, and Quinn says he’s totally handled. What about Meg, though? After all, Huck doesn’t have the best taste in women. Remember Becky, the woman who set him up as Fitz’s would-be assassin?

When Huck returns home, he finds Meg waiting for him. They get it on, but in a postcoital conversation, Meg asks him if she can meet with Olivia in person to talk about finding Jennifer’s killer. Hmmm, suspicious.

So, Huck visits Abby to ask for a favor — he wants to meet with a max-security prisoner. In exchange, he tells her that Jennifer Fields is alive.

That prisoner turns out to be…

Yup. They wouldn’t mention her if they weren’t going to have her on the show, right? Huck wants to know how she pulled one over on him. In return, Becky asks for his help in seeing her sister. But soon, she reveals it was all a ruse — to prove her point that Huck is gullible and a sucker for sob stories. Bait and Huck!

Huck then calls Olivia. He tells her that Rowan had fallen in love with Sandra and was simply protecting her. Liv won’t believe it. Rowan is a monster and always will be.

That cuts Huck to the core. He invites Meg over and is waiting with a syringe filled with an opiate. He threatens her and asks who she’s working for. He asks about the woman she met with during lunchtime in the park. She denies knowing anything. “It was a mistake to trust you,” an anguished Huck whispers.

Meg trembles and tells him to do whatever he has to do. But she proclaims her innocence and calls him a monster just as he’s about to inject her. Huck stays his hand and lets her go.

Huck meets with Liv, Quinn, and Charlie in a parking garage. They found Sandra’s decomposing body in the trunk of a car with Rowan’s prints all over it. Huck still claims that Rowan didn’t do anything wrong and that Olivia just has a blind spot when it comes to her dad. People can change, Huck pleads. “They can meet a nice woman and fall in love and have a relationship and be normal.” Is he talking about Rowan or himself?

Liv refuses to listen and orders Quinn to kill Rowan and Huck to get rid of Sandra’s body.

But when Huck is burying Sandra, he finds a chip in her neck. It’s filled with footage from the exhibit. He and Liv watch in horror as Rowan confronts the Mystery Power People, kills Sandra, and then is forced to work for them after they threaten his daughter’s life. Olivia doesn’t apologize but simply calls Quinn to stop the hit on Rowan.

Instead of an apology, though, Olivia goes to see Meg. She tells her that Jennifer is alive and that Huck did what he did because he was protecting her. He’s not a monster, and people can change. A tearful Huck promises Meg, “I promise, I will never, ever touch you again.” But her face melts and together, they head out to see her bestie.

When they reach the hotel room, though, Jennifer is glad to see her friend — but Meg pulls out a gun and shoots her! And then she shoots Huck in the shoulder and stomach. As we see in a flashback, Abby meets with Meg and the Mystery Woman. She’s the traitor!
