School board defends kindergarten class cut

P.E.I.'s English Language School Board is defending a decision to transfer a kindergarten teacher from Souris Regional.

The school started the year with three kindergarten classes but that's now been reduced to two.

Board superintendent Cynthia Fleet said the disruption of students is not ideal, but the teacher was needed at another school to keep kindergarten classes within a target maximum of 18 students.

"We have a number of schools that have gone over that class size cap and we need to move teachers into those schools," said Fleet.

"This is not the only change being made in the school district. It's business as usual for the opening of school and we reassign our resources as needed."

Fleet said kindergarten enrollment dropped to 36 students in Souris after the start of the year, so only two teachers are needed.

The Souris Home and School Association raised concern about the move. It said students are already in a transitional period and don't need any more change.
