School employee gave student drugs, liquor to have sex: Winnipeg police
Sheryl Ann Dyck, a 42-year-old educational assistant at a Winnipeg high school, has been charged with sexual exploitation.
According to police, Dyck "initiated an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old male student" between March and October 2014.
“Certainly, their ability to mentally function is impaired,” said Cst. Eric Hofley. “That's the whole point of … supplying the youth with drugs and/or alcohol, right, is to lessen their inhibitions and perhaps do things that they wouldn't do if they weren't impaired by those drugs and/or alcohol.”
Between March and October, Dyck allegedly supplied the student with drugs and alcohol and the relationship progressed over time, resulting in sexual contact on numerous occasions, police said.
Police noted contact happened during and after school hours but wouldn't say if it happened on school property. The school was not named.
The relationship became known to police after the student came forward. Police were notified and the child abuse unit began an investigation.
A Winnipeg School Division (WSD) spokesperson confirmed Dyck was an employee at one of its schools. The division wouldn't say if she had worked at any other school.
The WSD is providing clinical services to the student and his family, including counselling.
Dyck, who has been on administrative leave since October, was arrested and charged on Dec. 11.
The charges include:
- Sexual exploitation.
- Administering a substance with intent to stupefy a person to have illicit sexual intercourse.
- Supplying liquor to a minor.
- Driving without as license or with an invalid licence.
