Some schools closed as freezing rain, high winds expected for N.B.

Freezing rain and poor road conditions caused the closure of a handful of schools in the northern part of New Brunswick Wednesday morning, with poor weather in the forecast for much of the province throughout the day.

Anglophone West district closed schools in Zone 1 — Edmundston.

Francophone Northwest district closed all of its schools for the day.

Anglophone North district delayed school openings by two hours, with buses also running two hours later for pick-ups.

Environment Canada warnings were issued for much of the province.

Rainfall and freezing rain warnings were issued for the Edmundston area, Fredericton area, Grand Falls area, St. Stephen area, Woodstock area and the western half of Restigouche county.

A freezing rain bout of four to six hours was forecast for Wednesday morning before transitioning to rain. The warning said 25 to 40 mm of rain was possible during an intense low pressure system tracking west of New Brunswick Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

A freezing rain warning was also issued for the Grand Lake, Mount Carleton, Oromocto, Stanley and Sussex regions.

Rainfall and wind warnings were issued for Saint John and Grand Manan. A wind warning was issued for the Acadian Peninsula with gusts expected of up to 90 km/h along the Acadian Peninsula and Fundy Coast Wednesday night and Thursday morning, according to Environment Canada.

Special weather statements calling for heavy rain and strong winds were issued for several other places across the province.
