Scream 5 is reportedly expected to start shooting before the end of the month.

According to Variety, the next instalment of the slasher franchise is prepared to begin filming in a studio located in Wilmington, North California.

Original cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette will be reprising their roles as Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and Deputy Dewey Riley, respectively, with the film set to arrive in cinemas in 2022.

Marley Shelton will also return as her Scream 4 character Deputy Judy Hicks, but it seems no more original cast will be joining the project.

As for new faces, the film will welcome Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega and Jack Quaid, as well as Sonia Ammar, for whom this will be her first major role in a feature film.

It's currently unclear if Scream 5 will be a continuation of Wes Craven's iconic series, or if it'll be a total reboot, but it has been described as "relaunch of Scream".

That would suggest it's more likely to be a soft reboot than a direct sequel to Scream 4 and the original trilogy.

Recently, Arquette confessed that his least favourite sequel was Scream 3, explaining: "We had to throw the script out at the beginning. They were rewriting the whole time. We'd get pages like on the day of shooting.

"It was just kind of all over the place. It's interesting and it's funny but it's a different tone from the rest."

He continued: "My favourite is Scream 1, just because that's where it all started and it was such a surprise how the audience loved it so much. And getting to work with Wes [Craven, the late director] for the first time was a real dream come true."

Scream 5 will arrive in cinemas on January 14, 2022, while Scream is available now on Amazon Prime and the original trilogy is also on Blu-ray and DVD.
