SINGAPORE — For a second consecutive SEA Games, Singapore's fencers improved on their best-ever medal haul, as they completed their competitions on Wednesday (18 May) with a total of six golds, four silvers and five bronzes.

This is an improvement from their previous record haul of four golds, three silvers and six bronzes set at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines.

On Wednesday, the men's foil fencers retained their team gold for a third straight Games, while the women's sabre team earned a silver in their first-ever final.

The men's foil team of Joel Chiu, Kieren Lock, Matthew Lim and individual gold-winner Jonathan Au Eong swept to a comfortable 45-28 victory over Malaysia in the final.

However, there was drama in the women's sabre event, as Singapore's Jolie Lee, who won an individual bronze at the Games, was stretchered off with a suspected anterior cruciate ligament injury during the team's 45-40 semi-final win over Thailand.

With Lee unable to continue, the remaining trio of Lee Kar Moon, Jessica Ong and Nicole Wee fought valiantly in the final, but eventually succumbed 39-45 to Vietnam.

Besides the men's foil team gold, Singapore fencers were also triumphant in the women's individual epee (Elle Koh), the men's individual foil (Au Eong), the women's epee and foil teams, and the men's epee team events.

Two golds for Singapore paddlers in doubles competitions

At the Hai Duong Gymnasium, Singapore's table tennis players shrugged off the disappointment of not winning golds in the team events, as they won two out of the three doubles finals on Wednesday.

It was in fact an all-Singapore affair in the mixed doubles final, as Koen Pang and Wong Xin Ru defeated national teammates Clarence Chew and Zeng Jian 11-5, 11-8, 7-11, 7-11, 11-5 to land the gold medal.

Following the final, Zeng paired with Zhou Jingyi to face defending champions Suthasini Sawettabut and Orawan Paranang of Thailand in the women's doubles final. However, they were no match for the Thais, who easily won 11-9, 11-4, 11-7, and had to settle for the silver medal.

Nonetheless, Chew and Ethan Poh made sure that Singapore finished off on a high note, as they defeated the Philippines' Richard Gonzales and John Russel Misal 5-11, 11-8, 11-4, 12-10 to clinch the men's doubles gold. Pang and his doubles partner Josh Chua won the joint-bronze medal after losing to the Filipino pair in the semi-finals.
