Sea lion takes a break on roof of Honda Civic

If you’re a sea lion, sometimes a car can look a lot like a rock. Perhaps that’s the only way to explain why one of the hefty mammals was recently spotted sunning itself on the roof of a parked car.

The one-minute clip was posted to Facebook Saturday by alpaca farmer and Freeland, Washington resident Melanie Sceva Hill.

The video’s caption reads: “Only on Whidbey Island! A harbor seal (or sea lion?) on the roof of someone’s car in the Nichols Brothers parking lot. This is happening right now and I guess he’s been there for a while!”

In the video, a small crowd with camera phones in hand has gathered around the action — a sea lion making itself comfortable on the roof of a Honda Civic.

A woman off camera — likely Hill — can be heard saying what we’re all thinking:

“That is the weirdest thing. Why would he even do that?”

The camera zooms in and the animal’s face becomes clearly visible as he sticks his snout skyward. After a moment spent swaying to and fro, the sea lion leans down and rests his large brown head on the roof in perfect napping position.

In a comment on her post, Hill said it appeared people were waiting for the sea mammal to make its way off the car on its own.

An adult male sea lion weighs about 660 pounds. No word on vehicle damage, but we’re going to go ahead and assume there was some.
