Watch: 8 Out Of 10 Cats comedian Sean Lock dies aged 58
Sean Lock’s final public appearance was to help raise money to stop food poverty.
The 58-year-old, whose death was announced today after a battle with cancer, was seen in a black rollneck jumper as he spoke to the camera from his home.
Filmed in December 2020, Lock still had his trademark wit as he said: “I’m Sean Lock. You may know me as that bloke off the telly whose name you can’t remember.”
He then celebrates the work of Edible London, who had helped provide ingredients for a million meals to help those struggling in lockdown.
Encouraging viewers to donate to the crowdfunder, Lock informed viewers that 50p could help provide a meal to someone in need.
The video proved to be one of his final public workpieces, with Lock quietly removing himself from camera amid his battle with cancer.
The 8 Out Of 10 Cats star’s management announced today that he had died, with friends suggesting that he knew he was terminal for a while.
As hundreds of tributes were paid to the star, many named him ‘one of the modern greats’ thanks to his quick wit, blunt sense of humour, and skill at telling jokes.
Susie Dent, who starred with Locke on 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, wrote: “I wish I had the words to describe the exceptional man that was Sean Lock. But today I don’t, and I think he might have liked it that way.”

Ricky Gervais added: “Such sad news. RIP the great Sean Lock. One of the funniest, most influential comedians of a generation. A lovely man.”
Jon Richardson, who was the opposing team captain to Lock on 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, also praised his friend, saying in tribute: “I idolised Sean as a comic long before I became a comedian myself and ten years working alongside him didn’t diminish that in the least. An incredible comic brain and a truly unique voice.
“I’m devastated for his family today and sad for comedy that we have lost one of the very best. Undisputed, undefeated, carrot in a box champion. I will miss him.
