Season rewind: Disruptive spring snow piles up across southern Ontario

Although spring snow across southern Ontario isn't completely unheard of, it can certainly feel disruptive, especially after a milder and pleasant start to the season so far. That was the case Wednesday morning, as heavy wet snow piled up and slowed commute times throughout the region.

A widespread 5-10 cm of snow was forecast for most places, though with total amounts varying depending on location and elevation. The Niagara region was the target zone for the heaviest accumulations, with as much as 15 cm expected there. The further north of the Highway 401 corridor you went, the lesser amounts of snowfall were expected, as the centre of the low remained well south of the border.

For those who were ready to let go of the winter season all together, the good news is, the snow won't last long. Abundant sunshine and warmer, near seasonal temperatures return as soon as Friday, with fair conditions persisting into Saturday as well.

"So while this week's snowfall was likely to be disruptive considering the time of year, it won't be sticking around for long," says Michael Carter, a meteorologist at The Weather Network.

Still, April snowfall is always a sight to see, as social media erupted with images of the wintry spring scenes. Here's a look at the late-season snow:
