In a shock interview with NPR yesterday, Selena Gomez accused Justin Bieber of being emotionally abusive during their on-off relationship that spanned from 2010 to 2018.

During the interview the singer discussed her new single Lose You to Love Me, saying that the track was her way of getting "respectful closure" after ending an unhealthy relationship. "It was very difficult and I'm happy it's over," Selena told NPR's Lulu Garcia-Navarro. Adding that Lose You to Love Me is "a great way to just say, you know, it's done."

Later in the interview Garcia-Navarro asks Selena directly about the relationship, and whether it has been hard to move on from the pain of it. "No, because I've found the strength in it," Selena tells her. "It's dangerous to stay in a victim mentality. And I'm not being disrespectful, I do feel I was a victim to certain abuse."

Garcia-Navarro quickly asks if Selena is referring to emotional abuse, to which she replies, "Yes, and I think that it's something that I had to find a way to understand it as an adult. And I had to understand the choices I was making. As much as I definitely don't want to spend the rest of my life talking about this," Selena adds. "I am really proud that I can say I feel the strongest I've ever felt and I've found a way to just walk through it with as much grace as possible."

In September of last year Justin took to Instagram to say express remorse at his behaviour in previous relationships, telling followers, "I started doing pretty heavy drugs at 19 and abused all of my relationships. I became resentful, disrespectful to women, and angry. I became distant to everyone who loved me, and I was hiding behind a shell of a person that I had become."

The couple met in 2009 and announced their relationship in 2010. They went on to split and reunite a number of times until 2018 when they finally called it quits. Since then Bieber married model Hailey Baldwin (now Bieber) and Selena went on to release her third No.1 album, Rare, and continued to be a style icon.
