  • Demi Lovato gave an emotional performance of her new song “Anyone” at the Grammy Awards last night.

  • Selena Gomez praised Demi on Instagram for taking the Grammys stage.

If you grew up in the Golden Era of Disney Channel—that is, when Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez, and Demi Lovato reigned supreme—chances are, you know Selena and Demi used to be attached at the hip. They met back in 2002 while filming Barney and Friends and ended up going down similar career paths, making it seem like they’d be best friends forever. But as any Lovatic or Selenator knows, they drifted apart.

But Demi and Selena’s on-again, off-again friendship didn’t stand in the way of Selena supporting Demi’s moving Grammy Awards performance of “Anyone,” the song Demi wrote just days before her 2018 overdose.

Although Selena wasn’t at the Grammys last night, she, like millions of others, saw Demi’s moment of triumph on television and saw it fit to congratulate her on her strength. “I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational, and DESERVED this moment was,” Selena wrote on her Instagram Story. “Demi, I’m so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and bravery.”

Before taking the stage, Demi talked about what the new song means to her.

“I almost listen back and hear these lyrics as a cry for help,” Demi said in an interview with New Music Daily With Zane Lowe ahead of her performance. “And you kind of listen back to it and you kind of think, How did nobody listen to this song and think, ‘Let’s help this girl?’

“I was recording it in a state of mind where I felt I was okay, but clearly I wasn’t,” Demi continued. “I even listen back to it and I’m like, Gosh, I wish I could go back in time and help that version of myself.”

Demi’s emotional delivery of the song earned her a standing ovation.
