Sen. John Fetterman says Biden impeachment is a 'big circlejerk on the fringe right' and that Republicans have a 'fetish for Hunter Biden'
Sen. John Fetterman says he's not worried about a potential impeachment of President Joe Biden.
He says it's just a "big circlejerk on the fringe right" and that it will only hurt Republicans.
Additionally, he argued that Republicans have a "fetish" for Hunter Biden.
House Republicans may be gearing up to launch an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, but Sen. John Fetterman isn't the least bit worried.
In fact, he seems to relish the prospect.
The Pennsylvania Democrat sat down with a group of reporters in his Senate office on Wednesday afternoon, where he used assistive technology to allow him to hear and respond to questions. Since having a stroke during his 2022 Senate campaign, he has suffered from an auditory processing disorder.
Asked by reporters about the potential impeachment inquiry, Fetterman repeatedly suggested that it would only hurt Republicans politically, sarcastically putting his hands up and saying "oooh, no, please, don't."
"Go ahead and do it, I dare you," he said. "If you're gonna keep threatening it, then go ahead, just do it."
"It would just be like a big circlejerk on the fringe right," Fetterman later said of a potential impeachment.
He then pointed out the multiple criminal indictments against former President Donald Trump.
"Your man has what, three or four indictments now?" he said. "Sometimes you just gotta, you know, call their bullshit."
"Trump has a mugshot," Fetterman later remarked. "And he's been impeached twice."
Fetterman's laid-back attitude about the matter represents something of a break from most other Democrats, who have generally treated a potential impeachment with a degree of gravity, even as they argue that there's no evidence to justify it.
"Nobody would respect it. Everybody would know that it's bullshit," said Fetterman. "It really would, it would diminish what impeachment really means."
The Pennsylvania Democrat demurred when asked if he believed the rest of the party should adopt a similar stance as him.
"I only represent myself," he said.
House Republicans have focused on as-of-yet unproven allegations that President Biden was financially entangled in his son's business dealings, including in China and Ukraine, as they've teased an impeachment inquiry.
Asked if he believed there was anything problematic about Hunter Biden's business relationships, Fetterman was dismissive.
"Hunter Biden is a fixation of the right echo chamber, and he's not... on the ballot," said Fetterman. "I'm more focused on getting [Pennsylvania Democratic Senator] Bob Casey re-elected... and Joe Biden re-elected."
During the briefing, news broke that Special Counsel David Weiss would seek a grand jury indictment of Hunter Biden, and NBC News reporter Frank Thorp asked Fetterman if that would be a political liability for the president.
"They have a fetish for Hunter Biden," Fetterman responded. "And if they really want to keep going at it, that's up to them, but he's not... on the ballot."
