Serena Williams Reacts to Wimbledon Loss

"This is literally just the beginning."

Serena Williams has had a triumphant 2018. From getting real about the severe complications she faced after childbirth to shutting down body-shamers, she has proven time and time again to be the role model we need.

Serena’s response to her loss in the Wimbledon finals on Saturday, July 14, has given us yet another reason to look up to her. As Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton cheered her on from the stands, the tennis star remained gracious as ever, acknowledging the outstanding performance of her opponent, Angelique Kerber.

"I was really happy to get this far,” she said in her post-match interview. “For all the moms out there, I was playing for you today and I tried, but Angelique played really well.”

Serena had tears in her eyes as she explained that the tournament had given her the confidence boost she needed, especially after pulling out of the French Open in May. She remarked: “I didn’t know a couple of months ago where I was, and so these two weeks have showed me I can really compete and be a contender to win grand slams. This is literally just the beginning. I took a giant step at Wimbledon, but my journey has just began.”

Serena’s husband, Alexis Ohanian, also celebrated her success in an emotional tribute on Instagram.

“Days after our baby girl was born, I kissed my wife goodbye before surgery and neither of us knew if she would be coming back,” the post’s caption reads. “We just wanted her to survive — 10 months later, she's in the #Wimbledon final.”

Win or lose, hats off to Serena. She’s the greatest of all time, both on and off the court.
