Yahoo Finance Live anchors report on Serena Williams's announcement to retire from tennis after the U.S. Open.

Video Transcript

BRAD SMITH: Everyone, before we go to break, we have some news from the world of sports. 23 time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams announcing she will retire from tennis following the US Open. In a Vogue article, Williams said she never liked the word "retirement," and maybe the best word to describe it is "evolution." Williams recently received her first victory since the 2021 French Open.

If Williams won the US Open, which will be held from August to September, she would tie with Margaret Court for the Grand Slam record here. I've seen Serena Williams at the US Open, and the scene is absolutely electrifying right here in New York City. No doubt this is going to be a stellar sendoff.

BRIAN SOZZI: Please don't go. Just please don't go, Serena.

BRAD SMITH: Please don't. Exactly.

BRIAN SOZZI: It's just been a pleasure watching her career. It's just absolutely phenomenal. But you were noting ticket prices already--

BRAD SMITH: Yes.

BRIAN SOZZI: --going up.

BRAD SMITH: I was looking at them here in the commercial break. And even for the first round, second session, it looked like they had already moved up, at least for some of the tickets that I had been looking at prior to this, like, last week.

BRIAN SOZZI: Even the Federal Reserve can't stop that inflation. I mean, come on.

JULIE HYMAN: I would encourage everyone to read her essay in Vogue that she writes about. It's clearly a very difficult and reluctant decision on her part. She's 41 years old. She has a five-year-old daughter. And she makes clear in this that she wants to have more kids. And she doesn't want to be pregnant and playing again like she was when she was playing in the Australian Open in 2017. So that part seems to have fed partly into the decision.

BRAD SMITH: Yeah, it's going to be amazing to see how the sports world really rallies around Serena at the next coming up tournament.
