Sgt. Ryan Russell snowplow death jury selection begins

Jury selection will begin this week in the trial of a man accused of killing Toronto police Sgt. Ryan Russell, who died after being hit by a stolen snowplow on Jan. 12, 2011.

Richard Kachkar of St. Catharines is charged with first-degree murder in the case.

Police say Kachkar, 46, stole the snowplow then led police on a wild chase through snow-covered city streets.

Russell was struck and killed near the intersection of Avenue and Davenport roads while trying to wave down the driver.

Kachkar was later shot and arrested by police on Keele Street near Humberside Avenue in the Junction neighbourhood after an hour-long pursuit.

Russell, 35, was married with a young child. He was also an 11-year member of the force.
