Shawn Mendes recently sat down with Vanity Fair to take a lie detector test and we got more than a few revelations along the way – including his very honest thoughts on Taylor Swift’s long-time boyfriend Joe Alwyn.
On September 20, Vanity Fair posted the interview with Shawn, in which he discussed everything from spending time in Miami with Camila Cabello to his latest collaboration with Justin Bieber. Halfway through the video, Shawn gets asked about his relationship with Taylor and things got pretty interesting. Shawn revealed that the two have remained close since they did her 1989 tour together and still often text. Shawn said he is “always asking her for advice on music,” even if they last texted a month ago. All reasonable and good until this point but things took an unexpected turn when Shawn was asked directly about Joe Alwyn.
“Do you approve of Taylor’s current boyfriend Joe Alwyn?” the interviewer asked, handing him a photo of the actor. “I’ve never personally met Joe, but he looks like a sweet guy,” Shawn swiftly responds. But his pleasing response was quickly shut down by the lie detector test operator. “You’re not telling the truth. You’re being deceptive.”
Maybe somewhat unexpectedly, Shawn then did not hesitate to clarify – and his reasoning is interesting. “I’m lying a little bit? Yeah, I mean, he’s kind of got a little bit of a villain look about him. I mean, he looks like a nice guy but, like, he, at any movement, could turn into a villain, you know? He’s got really blue eyes, and I struggle with eyes that blue, you know? Like, I find it easier to trust brown eyes.” (I mean, we can think of a few Taylor songs — “Gorgeous,” “Ronan”... — that’d beg to disagree but fair enough!)
As expected, Taylor and Joe have not yet publicly reacted to Shawn’s “revelation,” which was more than likely tongue-in-cheek, but fans have. “joe alwyn failed the shawn mendes vibe check!!!!” one fan commented after seeing the video snippet. “shawn mendes thinks joe alwyn [is a] villain because he has blue eyes i—,” another one added. Other fans were simply taken aback by the inclusion of the question in the first place and, of course, there were also some who took the chance to create some quality memes from the revelatory tidbit.
