Shawnee man drowns in Stockton Lake over the Fourth of July weekend

A 60-year-old Shawnee man drowned Saturday in Stockton Lake in southwestern Missouri, according to the highway patrol.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the man who died as Craig H. Olson.

Olson was swimming near a boat in a cove in the area of the Stockton Dam when he dove below the water and resurfaced, according to a report from the highway patrol. He then swam toward the boat, which was stationary, went under the water again and did not resurface.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. Saturday.

Olson was not wearing a life jacket. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a Cedar County deputy coroner.

The death was the lone drowning reported by the highway patrol over the Independence Day holiday weekend.

MSHP said troopers also investigated ten boating crashes and seven associated injuries statewide in Missouri. Troopers made 11 boating while intoxicated arrests.
