Shed fire that injured 4 children not suspicious, RCMP say

A weekend shed fire that left four children injured on a Manitoba First Nation is not suspicious, RCMP say.

The exact cause of the fire, which destroyed the shed, has not yet been determined. It is part of the RCMP's ongoing investigation but has been ruled as non-criminal.

However, police did say it started inside the shed, where the kids had been playing.

Two six-year-old girls and a five-year-old girl were sent to hospital in Winnipeg, where one was listed in serious condition at last word.

A three-year-old boy was treated at the local nursing station on the reserve, Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (NCN), and released.

The fire broke out in the afternoon of June 6 and trapped the kids inside. Two people, Chasity Spence and Arnold Culley, rescued the children by ripping away part of the wall.

"Then like two seconds after we got them out, that shack fell," Spence told CBC News.

NCN, formerly known as Nelson House First Nation, is located about 80 kilometres west of Thompson.
