Shipping container blown into St. John's harbour amid 95 km/h gusts

High wind gusts blew a shipping container into the water in the St. John's harbour Friday afternoon.

Videos and photographs posted on social media showed a container bobbing in the water, not far from a vessel at the Oceanex shipping yard.

By noon Friday, peak wind gusts in the area were 95 km/h.

Environment Canada has a wind warning in effect for the Avalon Peninsula, as well as the Clarenville and Burin Peninsula, through Friday.

Gusts peaking up to 100 km/h are expected to gradually diminish by Friday evening.

A tugboat hauled the shipping container back to land.
