Shiseido Americas to Make Hand Sanitizers for Those Fighting the Front Lines of the COVID-19 Pandemic

As New York and New Jersey brace themselves for what the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projects will be the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in their states, more and more brands are stepping up to help those fighting the front lines. For example, the Shiseido Americas Corporation announced on Wednesday, April 8, that it will be dedicating a part of one of its manufacturing facilities in New Jersey to produce hand-sanitizing gel for health organizations.

"Helping others is part of our company's DNA. Our incredible team embraces the spirit of omotenashi, which translates from Japanese as 'heartfelt hospitality,'" writes Shiseido Americas CEO Marc Rey in a statement emailed to Allure. "In the midst of this global pandemic, we are proud to do our part in support of the courageous medical professionals and volunteers who are on the front lines fighting the spread of coronavirus daily. This would not be possible without the goodwill of our dedicated employees and partners, to whom I extend my sincere gratitude."

The announcement made by Shiseido explains that each sanitizer will contain 70 percent alcohol and will be donated to local New York and New Jersey health facilities and community outreach organizations that are working to help fight COVID-19. Production will take place in a part of the brand's manufacturing facility in East Windsor, New Jersey, and the company says that it plans to produce 80,000 medical-grade sanitizers with production completing sometime mid-April.

The company is a subsidiary of the global Shiseido Company, Limited, based in Tokyo, and parent company to popular beauty brands, including Nars and Laura Mercier. Shiseido Americas joins the likes of Pierre Fabre Group and Coty Inc. that have also dedicated facilities to producing and donating hand-sanitizing gels for free. This group effort is welcomed — and necessary — at this time.
