Shooting near Swope Park Saturday evening left one man dead, Kansas City police say

Kansas City police are investigating a shooting near Swope Park Saturday night that killed one person.

Police were called to the 5600 block of East 69th Street around 6:30 p.m. where they found a man with a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to the hospital with critical injuries, but died several hours later, according to Sgt. Philip DiMartino, spokesperson with the Kansas City Police Department.

A preliminary investigation indicates there was an altercation between two people who previously knew each other, but no one is yet in custody.

Anyone with information is asked to contact homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously through the TIPS hotline.

This killing marks Kansas City’s 133rd homicide in 2024, compared to 162 this time last year, according to homicides tracked by The Star.
