Singapore gymnast Tamara Ong wins gold in multi-nation team event at YOG
Singapore gymnast Tamara Ong earned a gold medal at the 2018 Youth Olympics Games in Buenos Aires, being part of a 13-athlete, multi-national squad that won the multi-discipline team event on Thursday night (Singapore time, 11 October) in Argentina.
The 15-year-old scored 38 points in the women’s artistic discipline for Team Simone Biles Orange, which amassed a total of 293 points to finish ahead of Team Max Whitlock Green (349 points) and Team Oksana Chusovitina Black (352 points) for the gold.
Points are given for every final standing in the discipline (one point for first place, two points for second spot and so on), and the team with the fewest points wins.
The other disciplines are acrobatic, rhythmic, men’s artistic and men’s/women’s trampoline, with 21 exercises in total.
Medals from such mixed-nation events are not added to a country’s overall medal tally at the Games, which is into its third edition after the inaugural Singapore Games in 2010 and the Nanjing Games in 2014.
Singapore has previously won two gold medals at the Youth Olympics, both coming in 2014 from sailors Bernie Chin and Samantha Yom.
