SINGAPORE — It will come down to the wire at the Singapore Water Polo Inter-Nations Cup, with both Singapore's men and women A teams having a chance to be crowned champions at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.

On the penultimate day of the men's team competition on Saturday (21 May), Singapore A put themselves within touching distance after they defeated the Philippines 12-3 for their fourth straight victory.

The hosts were buoyed by the home crowd and responded with a four-goal burst in the second quarter, paving the way for the victory. Yip Yang plundered five goals, while Yu Junjie helped himself to a hat-trick.

Indonesia also kept alive their title hopes after a come-from-behind 9-8 win over Singapore B. Trailing 7-6 after three quarters, they scored thrice in the final period, including the winner with only four seconds left on the clock.

Thailand are also in the title mix after defeating Malaysia 24-4. If Singapore A beats Indonesia in their final match on Sunday, they will be crowned champions regardless if Thailand defeats Singapore B, due to a better head-to-head record.

Indonesia will need to beat Singapore A, and hope Thailand loses to Singapore B, to win the title. If both Indonesia and Thailand win, then the Thais will be crowned champions due to their earlier victory over Indonesia.

It will be a more straightforward affair in the women’s competition with Singapore A squaring off against arch-rivals Thailand in a winner-takes-all match on Sunday.

Singapore A beat neighbours Malaysia 17-4 on Saturday, while Thailand defeated Singapore B 20-3.

Tickets for the final day of the Inter-Nations Cup are available at Ticketmaster.
