Sinkhole opens up on Route 206 in Iona

Drivers who use P.E.I.'s Route 206 in Iona will have to skirt around a deep sinkhole that opened up Monday evening.

Provincial maintenance crews noticed the hole and brought in staff to monitor the situation overnight. Barriers were put up Tuesday morning, limiting the highway to one lane.

The province says there have been some structural issues with the culvert, but Darrell Evans with Transportation and Public Works says the storm on Monday had an impact.

“We think the rain exacerbated the problem and created a sink hole there.” he said.

“So for the time being, we have the road closed down to one lane with barricades, and we'll review the situation and see what we can do in terms of a solution and we'll go from there.”

Evans says the sinkhole is likely more than seven metres deep. The culvert structure will probably need to be replaced as well.
