Six-month-old puppy saved after accidentally swallowing a steak knife

It was an extremely close call for one mischievous young puppy that somehow managed to swallow a 20cm long steak knife.

A six-month-old Staffordshire bull terrier named Lexie shocked staff at the Animal Referral Hospital in Sydney, Australia, when x-rays revealed a serrated blade inside the pup’s stomach.

“On a dog this small it looked like she had swallowed a sword,” ARH veterinarian Dr. Jody Braddock told The Daily Telegraph.

The dog’s owner told the vet clinic that she’s not sure why Lexie would swallow the knife, but did reveal that her pet has been known to snatch up anything she can get a hold of.

“She has a habit of pinching stuff like socks and shoes from around the house and hoarding them under the sofa,” she said.

Knowing they would have to act fast, veterinarians immediately set to work removing the knife from Lexie’s stomach.

Using an endoscope camera and some forceps, Dr. Braddock and the ARH emergency began extracting the knife by slowly pulling it up through the puppy’s oesophagus

After 45 minutes of carefully manoeuvring the blade was finally removed from the puppy’s stomach, all without causing any further damage to her insides.

Lexie is now recovering following her near-death experience, and hopefully in the future she’ll remember to stick to regular old chew toys instead of the kitchen cutlery.
