People in Skagway, Alaska, are getting ready to welcome hundreds of visitors for their annual Fourth of July celebrations and they're counting on Yukoners to help them defend a world record.

Seven years ago Skagway set the Guinness World Record for most people in an egg toss contest (1,162), said Buckwheat Donahue, spokesperson for the Skagway Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"We have successfully defended that title six times since 2008 from various places around the United States and we have 700 or 800 people who participate and usually about half of them are Canadian," he said.

Organizers are also reviving some old-time favourite events. They include a hot dog eating contest, the pie-eating contest — no hands allowed — and a keg toss.

The parade starts at 10 a.m. Alaska time.
