Skating, painting and jiving! ChillFest 2017 a cool success in St. John's

A little bit of cold weather didn't slow down the hundreds of people who braved the streets of St. John's to participate in the city's annual winter festival on Saturday.

ChillFest was a chance for residents of the storm-weathered city to get out and enjoy all that the community has to offer after a week of heavy snowfall and inclement weather.

At the Johnson GEO Centre on Signal Hill, musician Kelly Russell led an old-fashioned kitchen party, and helped judge a competition for the best ugly stick.

In Bannerman Park, skaters of all ages banded together to crisscross The Loop and enjoy both cold and warm treats.

And at the Quidi Vidi Village Plantation, artist Lesley Janes gave a free workshop on how to paint winter scenes on canvas.

Whether you were young or old, wanted to get cold or stay warm, organizer Robyn Dobbin said there was something for everything.

"A few people have said it's such a great way to get out now this weekend and enjoy what we just had a lot of issues with the last few days," she said.

"It's an opportunity for all ages to get out and enjoy the winter."

ChillFest continues on Sunday with a Freezin' Family Fun Run and Walk at Bowring Park, free afternoon snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals at Pippy Park and the annual Mega Play kids event at St. Teresa's Elementary.

The festival will conclude Sunday evening with a light parade at Bowring Park.
