My skin looks dull. But how long does a facial, exfoliation or peel last?

One of the most common questions clients ask about skin treatments like facials and peels is, “How long do they last?”

How long your facial will last will depend on the type of facial and the ingredients used. Here, I break down some of the most common types of facials and skin treatments and how long you can expect your results to last.

Massage

Facial massages involve techniques that stimulate certain pressure points in your face, neck and shoulders and can be a relaxing experience. Generally speaking, your skin will feel good for a few hours after a massage, although improved circulation can help to give your complexion a glowing look for the day.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells and other debris that has built up on the surface of your skin. This can be done manually or chemically with ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). The skin-smoothing benefits of an in-office exfoliation treatment typically lasts two to three days before dead skin cells begin to accumulate on the skin’s surface again.

However, if you have sensitive skin or an inflammatory condition like rosacea, you do not want to overdo exfoliation and need to be careful about which type of exfoliation you choose. Gentle chemical exfoliation is better for sensitive skin types than physical exfoliation.

Extractions

Extraction facials involve a deep cleansing that removes dirt and debris from clogged pores. Most people continue to see results from extractions for about a month. If you are using a retinoid, you will not need extractions as often because the retinoid helps to prevent pores from becoming clogged or compacted.

Hydroxy acid products or a peel

Peels that use hydroxy acids and other similar ingredients to cause the outermost layer of skin to peel are a two-step process. After the initial treatment is performed, your skin should start to peel in about two to three days and will need time to heal. So wait about four weeks for the next peel to ensure your skin has had time to heal in between treatments.
