SLC presents virtual performances of two family-friendly musicals

April is Musical Theatre Month at St. Lawrence College (SLC). The Music Theatre Performance program is presenting two family-friendly musicals, Drama 101 and Going Under.

Both performances explore the joy, challenges, and connections between high school students, according to a release from SLC. And, in keeping with pandemic safety measures, the shows can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home.

Music Theatre Performance Professor Chad McNamara told Kingstonist they are proud of the work they have accomplished over the past year.

"In 2020, we streamed two full-scale shows; The Tony winner for best musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, and a student-created devised piece titled Manifest. Both were massive learning curves for both faculty and students, and we soon realized this was an art form that wasn’t going away. Our spring season, which opens this coming Thursday, will not disappoint. We chose two all-Canadian written musicals, Drama 101 and Going Under, written by some of Canada’s best," he said.

"Supporting post-secondary musical theatre students is so important," McNamara continued. "During a time with little access to arts for these students to create, having this outlet to work together and craft production has been fantastic. These students should not go unnoticed, and we are so excited to witness their passion and resilient talent this upcoming weekend. As they say, the show must go on!"

Drama 101 is showing Thursday, Apr. 8 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Apr. 11 at 2 p.m.

Plot: When the students of Roselawn High School gather to celebrate the retirement of their favorite teacher, memories are shared, rivalries surface, and love blossoms. Featuring a cast of young artists, Drama 101 is a funny and heartwarming new musical about the joys and challenges of high school, theatre, and life.

Going Under has more viewing opportunities: Friday, Apr. 9 - 7 p.m., Saturday, Apr. 10 - 2 p.m. & 7 p.m. and Sunday, Apr. 11 - 7 p.m.

Plot: Going Under (formerly The Subway Songs) is a new musical that explores connection through a group of high schoolers en route to their graduation. When the subway they are riding comes to a screeching halt, these former friends are cut off from the world above, forced to put down their electronic devices and face each other, their own demons, and the tragic event that tore them apart four years earlier.

Tickets are available on the SLC Music Theatre website, along with more details on each show, including cast.
