SLO County football team scores big win in Ojai after starting season with defeats

After being defeated in their first two games (48-12 and 42-6) by teams with more experienced players, the Coast Union High School football team traveled to Ojai on Saturday, Sept. 16, and restored its poise with a 42-12 blowout against the Villanova Prep Wildcats.

Broncos quarterback Tony De Alba scored twice – on a 35-yard run and a 1-yard scamper – and tossed a pair of touchdown passes to his brother, Alex De Alba.

Fullback Adair Ponce, who blasted through the line for key first downs throughout the game, scored on a 6-yard run in the second quarter and on a fourth quarter 35-yard dash.

The score was 12-6 in favor of Coast Union at half time.

The Broncos came roaring out in the second half to lead 26-12 after three quarters and polished it off with 16 points in the final quarter.

“We just ‘stayed the course’ and executed in the second half,” Bronco offensive coordinator Charlie Casale wrote in a text after the game. “(It’s) always nice to get a win and play a lot of players.”

Following the win, the 1-2 Broncos find themselves well behind 3-0 Valley Christian Academy in the Coast Valley League.

Coast will host VCA in Cambria on Sept. 30.

On Saturday, Sept. 23, Coast will travel 210 miles to Santa Clarita Christian School for its fourth non-league game in a row.
