SLO police stopped 596 vehicles at a DUI checkpoint on Friday. Here are the results

Two San Luis Obispo drivers were cited during Friday’s DUI checkpoint — but not for driving under the influence.

The checkpoint took place from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. on the 500 block of Higuera, San Luis Obispo Police Department said on social media.

According to the agency, both drivers were cited for operating a vehicle without a license or with a suspended/revoked license.

In total, the agency said it contacted 596 drivers.

The location of the checkpoint was chosen based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes.

“The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads,” the agency said.

The checkpoint was funded by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
