Small earthquake shakes Fredericton area

Many New Brunswickers felt a serious rumble on Thursday night as a magnitude 3.6 earthquake was recorded east of Fredericton.

The small earthquake struck at 7:47 p.m. and it was centred just east of Taymouth, according to Earthquakes Canada.

Maggie O'Brien in Fredericton said she felt the rumble of the ground shaking.

"I was just sitting in my basement apartment watching TV and I felt a big rumble and I was kind of freaking out," she said.

"But I turned my TV back on and about a couple seconds later I felt it again and I knew it wasn't thunder because it was a big rumble. My walls were shaking, nothing fell but my house rumbled."

Wayne Gillies was getting his truck fixed with friends in nearby Durham Bridge when the ground started to shake.

"We felt the rumbling there and we looked at each other and we knew for sure it wasn't no thunder and lightning. That's for sure. It was nice and clear in the sky," he said.

Small earthquakes are not uncommon in New Brunswick.

The McAdam area saw a series of small quakes in 2012 and there were almost a dozen quakes across the province last fall.

But Thursday night's is one of the strongest centred in the province for about a decade.
