Smoke-filled heating system spurs evacuation at SLO County school
Students and staff were evacuated at Flamson Junior High School in Paso Robles on Friday morning after a report of smoke in a campus building.
The smoke, according to school district spokesperson Rebecca Justice, triggered the school’s fire alarm around 9 a.m.
The Paso Robles Fire Department responded and quickly found the source of the smoke: a heating system on top of the girls’ locker room, Justice said. Authorities ventilated the smoke and worked quickly to ensure the campus was safe.
Students began returning to their classrooms around 9:45 a.m. There were no injuries, according to the district.
“District maintenance staff will look at the equipment and make needed repairs or replacements as soon as possible,” Justice said.
