Snow, freezing rain means shovelling and messy roads on tap

A weekend snowfall seven days before Santa comes means odds are good for a white Christmas in Ottawa.

The snowfall warning for Ottawa and surrounding areas has officially ended, but there's more wintry weather on the way today.

Environment Canada has forecasted another two to four centimetres of snow mixed with freezing rain for Ottawa on Sunday.

The temperature is expected to drop to -14 C by Sunday afternoon, with wind from the west gusting from 30 to 50 km/h.

Snowy, icy mix causes havoc on the road

Ottawa police responded to more than 40 collisions during the early part of the day Saturday.

There were no serious collisions to report in Ottawa from midnight Saturday to early Sunday morning, police said, but officers were reminding the public to drive carefully in changing conditions.

Road conditions have also been treacherous outside of the city — particularly west of Ottawa.

Ontario Provincial Police shut down eastbound traffic on Highway 17 west of Arnprior, Ont., Sunday morning so crews could pull a tractor trailer from the ditch.

The truck slid off the road at 3:30 a.m. near Calabogie Road in McNab-Braeside Township.

The driver was not injured, police said. The highway's westbound lanes were reopened at around 10:30 a.m. and the eastbound lanes around noon.

OPP also closed a stretch of Highway 41 south of Eganville, Ont., at the junction with Highway 132 after a two-vehicle collision at around 6:30 a.m.

Two people were taken to hospital with minor injuries, and the highway had reopened by 8 a.m.

The Ottawa airport also reported a handful of cancellations and delays Sunday morning.

Passengers are reminded to check their flight status before heading out.
