Sochi Olympics wins gold for warmest temperatures

Until this year, the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics held the title of the warmest games in the last 20 years.

In this week's Science Smart, CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe explains how snow, rain, fog and heat gave Sochi, Russia bragging rights to the most extreme weather during the Olympic games.

Temperatures in the Olympic village reached as high as 20 C. This smashed Vancouver's record — during February 2010, temperatures averaged 7 C.

But, organizers were prepared for heat and what athletes called spring snow conditions: they experienced similar weather during test runs last year.
