Social workers in van spook girls visiting Yellowknife

It was a scary situation for two young girls who are visiting in Yellowknife.

Chyanna Catholique, 13, and her 11 year-old cousin Sierra were walking near the BMO bank on Old Airport Road around 1 a.m. Thursday when they saw a dark grey van driving slowly towards them.

Catholique said when it pulled up beside them the two women inside started asking questions, saying they were with Health and Social Services.

"They said, 'Is your mom sober?' And we said yes and they said, 'Are you going to meet her at Tim's and we said yeah, Catholique said. "But we actually lied because we were scared they would actually take us because we thought they were actually social services."

Catholique said the women then said they'd watch the girls walk to a nearby Tim Horton's.

The girls said they ran away after the incident.

Health and Social Services CEO Les Harrison said two social workers did speak to a pair of young girls that night because they were concerned the girls were out on the street alone late at night.

Harrison said his department doesn't have a program that patrols the streets.
