A home invasion in an upscale Philadelphia suburb turned fatal over the weekend after a suspect broke into a home in Lower Merion Township at 2:20 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office announced on Monday.

The intruder fatally shot 25-year-old Andrew Gaudio "multiple times" and Bernadette Gaudio, 61, also suffered "several gunshot wounds," though she was found "conscious" per the release. Bernadette was transported to Lankenau Medical Center where she underwent emergency surgery and remains in a critical condition.

Andrew was Bernadette's son, according to CBS News and NBC10 Philadelphia.

On Monday, the Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele identified the suspect as 42-year-old Philadelphia native Kelvin Roberts, sharing a photo of the man in a press conference, per CBS News. Per Steele, police believe a second person was helping Roberts and that the two intruders entered the home through the basement.

Steele called the incident a “terrible homicide,” highlighting that “multiple shots were fired,” per CBS News.

He also shared that Bernadette was the one who called 911 and alerted the authorities, despite being shot multiple times.

Steele said that he believed Andrew, fought back and tried to help his mom,” prior to being fatally shot.

Police released an image of a white vehicle on Facebook with a man believed to be Roberts behind the wheel, offering a $5,000 cash reward for anyone who could provide helpful information leading to the arrest of Roberts.

The District Attorney's Office said a "joint investigation by the Montgomery County Detective Bureau and the Lower Merion Township Police Department found dashcam footage from a Lower Merion Police Patrol vehicle which captured the officer pulling in front of a white Hyundai Azera, driven by Roberts, leaving the scene of the homicide."

According to ABC News, Bernadette's 2004 Jeep Cherokee, which was stolen during the home invasion, was later recovered on Dec. 8 in West Philadelphia.

Police also recovered a jewelry box belonging to Bernadette at another home in Philadelphia linked to Roberts.

"The jewelry box is key in that it shows that they were in the house, they committed a burglary, a robbery, a home invasion, and we have the evidence of that in the jewelry box," Steele said, per CBS News.
