Sonoma County Officials Respond to Glass Fire With 'Cautious Optimism'
The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said it was facing the Glass Fire with “cautious optimism” on Tuesday, September 29, while still warning residents of the many risks a wildfire can pose.
The sheriff’s office said the theme for Tuesday was “cautious optimism” after cool weather and lighter wind helped firefighters battle the blaze. As of Monday night, the Glass Fire had burned more than 36,000 acres – about 56 square miles – in Sonoma and Napa counties and was zero percent contained, according to fire officials.
The fire had destroyed 113 structures as of September 28, Cal Fire said.
The sheriff’s office said the beginning of this footage shows the Glass Fire burning after 3 am on Monday. Officials said an “engine sound” heard in the beginning of the video was caused by a fuel tank before it exploded. The sheriff’s office said the tank exploded after the video ended, creating a “giant fireball shot a few hundred feet into the air.”
The sheriff’s office said the sound of propane tanks exploding was a “regular occurrence” while deputies evacuated neighborhoods. Officials said they were sharing these details to encourage people to evacuate “sooner rather than later” and be aware of the various hazards a fire can cause.
