South Algonquin Councillor Joe Vermaire resigns

South Algonquin Township Councillor Joe Vermaire has resigned. The representative on council for Dickens Ward in the township said in his resignation letter that he was stepping aside from his duties due to other commitments and changes in personal matters. The township accepted his resignation and wish Vermaire well in all of his future endeavors, and will look to fill the vacancy within the next 60 days, as stipulated in the Municipal Act.

In a letter dated July 27 to Bryan Martin, the CAO/clerk-treasurer, Vermaire said that he regretfully resigned his position effective immediately due to other commitments and changes in personal matters. He said he felt it was best to make way for someone else with the time and energy to devote fully to the position. He said he was proud to have been part of council and all that they accomplished, and proud to represent his constituents. He wished council and staff all the best going forward to meet whatever challenges awaited them.

Martin told The Bancroft Times on July 29 that Mayor Jane Dumas and council had been made aware of Vermaire’s resignation and provided a copy of his letter. He also said that his resignation letter will form part of the agenda for the council meeting on Aug. 4. After reviewing the pertinent sections of the Municipal Act, Martin put forth the options available to council in his staff report for the August 4 meeting. They are; appointing an individual to council, or requesting a byelection be held to fill the position, which Martin estimates would cost at least $5,000.

“I expect I will be given further direction by council at that meeting on how they wish to proceed with filling this vacancy,” he says. “The township wishes Councillor Vermaire the best in all of his future endeavors and thanks him for his dedication as a member of South Algonquin council.”
