South East Prairie Thunder win Allan Cup hockey tournament

Manitoba's South East Prairie Thunder beat Alberta's Bentley Generals in Saturday's Allan Cup final on Saturday, taking a top prize in Canadian men's senior hockey.

Fans packed the arena in Clarenville, N.L., despite both Newfoundland teams being knocked out of the tournament on Friday night.

It was a slow first period, in a stark contrast to the previous games at this year's Allan Cup. At the end of the opening period, neither team scored and they combined for only 13 shots on goal.

Things picked up late in the second, when the Thunder's Mark Agnew scored on a power play with just under six minutes remaining, putting them up 1-0.

Bentley had an excellent opportunity to put one past the goal line with seconds left in the second, but Thunder goalie Steve Christie was able to stop the puck from sliding in the net.

Christie got a bit of breathing room in the third, when South East Prairie's Shawn Limpright scored just after the four-minute mark.

The Generals made a strong final push with minutes left in the third, but a pair of late penalties killed their momentum and the Thunder held on to win with a final score of 2-0.

The Thunder last won the tournament in 2012.

The team will now take the 2015 title home to Steinbach, Man., where they will host next year's Allan Cup tournament.
