Southern Alberta under severe storm watches, heat warnings

Heat warnings and thunderstorm watches were issued Wednesday for parts of southern Alberta, including Calgary.

Environment Canada says it's possible dangerous thunderstorms could form, and could produce strong wind gusts, damaging hail and heavy rain. There is also a risk of a tornado.

The areas include:

  • Parts of Mountain View County; and Rocky View County, including Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds and Sundre.

  • Parts of County of Newell; Foothills County near Blackie; M.D. of Taber near Enchant; Vulcan County and Wheatland County.

  • Siksika Reservation 146.

  • City of Calgary.

  • Areas near Drumheller and Three Hills.

  • Areas near Red Deer, Ponoka, Innisfail and Stettler.

The agency says thunderstorms will develop this afternoon and some are expected to produce severe weather until late this evening.

There are also heat warnings in place for:

  • Parts of County of Newell; Foothills County near Blackie; M.D. of Taber near Enchant; Vulcan County and Wheatland County.

  • Siksika Reserve 146.

  • Parts of County of Forty Mile; and Cypress County near Drumheller and Three Hills.

  • Areas near Hanna, Coronation and Oyen.

  • Areas near Medicine Hat, Bow Island and Suffield.

The agency recommends rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day, to take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible and to drink plenty of water.

As well, no person, pet or child should be left in parked cars.
