SpaceX founder Elon Musk has announced plans to send a manned mission to Mars within the next decade.

The business magnate told the Code Conference that while there is currently no way of getting humans back from the red planet, it isn’t too far off from becoming a reality.

He revealed: “If things go according to plan, [we] should be able to launch people by 2024 with arrival in 2025.”

Musk’s grand plans are to build cities on Mars, and SpaceX will need to develop huge rockets to transport people and hardware there.

He confirmed that Mars cargo deliveries would start being sent out from as early as 2018.

The 44-year-old, who is also the co-founder of PayPal, also revealed to the conference that he plans to go to Mars himself “at some point” - but plans a more manageable trip to space in the next five years.
